About Us / Services

Brunswick Orthopaedic Associates has been a leader in providing orthopaedic surgical care to patients of Central New Jersey and beyond for over thirty years. By utilizing both traditional non-operative methods and the latest surgical innovations, the physicians at BOA have helped thousands of people in the community return to their active lifestyles.

Our philosophy is simple: Patient care should be tailored to a patient’s specific needs. We pay careful attention to a patient’s history, including how and when their ailment began, how it is affecting their lifestyle and livelihood, and what their activity goals are for the future. Once we understand our patient’s goals, we can best direct an operative or non-operative treatment strategy for their specific condition.

We employ this strategy in caring for our patients who are competitive athletes. We understand the importance of organized sports and physical fitness in our patient’s lives, and our goal is to return our patient-athletes to competition as rapidly, safely and effectively as possible.

For our older patients, who have developed arthritis of their hips or knees, we strive to help them back to an active and comfortable lifestyle through appropriate joint replacement surgery.

All of the doctors and staff at Brunswick Orthopaedic Associates are committed to providing the finest and most personable medical care possible. Patients’ needs are our highest priority.

  • Dr. Stephen H. Fried, MD

    Steven H. Fried, MD

Dr. Fried joined the physicians of Brunswick Orthopaedic Associates in the summer of 1981 after many years of medical and surgical training. Following graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Fried received a Masters of Medical Education and an MD degree from Rutgers Medical School. He then spent two years in General Surgery training at Pennsylvania Hospital, in Philadelphia, three years of Orthopaedic Surgery training at The George Washington University Hospital, and an extra year of training doing a Fellowship in major joint reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Over the past many years, Dr. Fried has dedicated his professional life to caring for patients who have developed arthritic conditions in their hips or knees. He has been at the forefront of joint replacement surgery, often working with various orthopaedic companies to create better prosthetic materials, as well as better instruments for their implementation. “There is nothing more satisfying than watching a patient walk down our hallways smiling and without pain following their replacement surgery.”

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Fried spends a portion of each week working with the Orthopaedic Residents at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital—training them in the art and science of Orthopaedic Surgery and joint reconstruction. “I try to convey to my residents that good communication with your patients and full and thorough preoperative planning are essential for good outcomes and relationships.” Dr. Fried notes that patients who understand the nature of their problem and the benefits as well as the risks of treatment will usually obtain an excellent result.

When away from his orthopaedic practice, Dr. Fried enjoys golf, skiing, and travel with his wonderful wife and three children.

  • Dr. Kenneth G. Swan, Jr., MD

    Kenneth G. Swan, Jr., MD

Dr. Swan specializes in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery, Orthopaedic Trauma, and General Orthopaedics. He says his training began before college, in high school, where he was a three-sport varsity athlete. As such, he suffered several sports injuries requiring orthopaedic care. As a Nutrition major at Cornell University, he played varsity football, which included Cornell’s second and last Ivy League Championship in 1990. Dr. Swan earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. This was followed by five years of orthopaedic residency and trauma surgery at University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey. An additional year of training was obtained at the University of Colorado, where Dr. Swan earned sub-specialty expertise in Shoulder Surgery and Sports Medicine. During that time, Dr. Swan was assistant team physician for the University of Colorado Buffaloes and the University of Denver Pioneers.

Dr. Swan, his wife, and two (now 3) children moved back to New Jersey and became a part of the Brunswick Orthopaedic Associates family in 2006. Since that time he has been the team physician for both the Woodbridge School District (Woodbridge, Colonia and JFK high schools) and Perth Amboy High School. According to Dr. Swan, “helping an injured student return to his or her athletic form and succeed at the high school or college level is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career”.

Dr. Swan believes that caring for the sick and injured is a privilege. As such, he states that he is constantly evaluating and re-evaluating his approach to patients and surgical care. “As with much in life, communication is the key. A geriatric internist in Brooklyn taught me early on as a first-year medical student: ‘Listen to your patients. The most important aspect of the patient-doctor interaction is the patient history. If you listen closely, your diagnosis and therefore your treatment plan will be known to you, before you even examine your patient or obtain an x-ray or blood test’”. Dr. Swan continues to apply this philosophy to his patients today.
